Dominic Thiem: 'The whole North American swing was just a sh...'

Dominic Thiem suffered a cold and fever over the last few weeks. He pulled out from Cincinnati but he still played the US Open. The Austrian lost to the Italian Thomas Fabbiano in a first round match on Tuesday. Speaking to the Austrian press, Thiem said: "I lost the run against time, there was not enough time, I am not 100 percent healthy compared to the past year and it's not enough against any opponent. But it's normal and every player has his issues."

"It was just four matches against lower level opponents, but Kitzbuhel was very emotional, it drained a lot of energy." Then on Sunday he took an air flight and went to Canada. "This time it did not go well and it was too much for the body, so in the end I have not recovered. I need to be fully healed for the rest of the year. I knew my chances were bad, I am disappointed by the entire situation. The whole American tour was just a sh... I feel physically bad, there is not too much positive to take with me."

Thiem is scheduled to play Davis Cup against Finland and Laver Cup next, before the Asian swing. But in an interview to APA his agent Herwig Straka said that there are 50 percent of chances that he will play the Davis Cup. On next year's schedule, Straka added: "We will definitely do something different, I think the preparation will be different, we still have to finalize it, there is also the ATP Cup. There is also a Davis Cup tie before Indian Wells, where he has to retain the title. There are some thing we have to change like how to approach the grass-court season because the summer is packed with Hamburg and Kitzbuhel."
