Federer is blessed, but younger guys are doing many things wrong - Hingis
In an interview to Coopzeitung, the former world No. 1 Martina Hingis commented on why Roger Federer still dominates over the younger guys. Hingis said: "It's a big credit of his if he fights for the title in all tournaments. In the same time, also guys like Alexander Zverev or Nick Kyrgios need to question themselves: if you always in a struggle with a player of this age, you are doing many things wrong. It shows, however, what you can do with the talent. Roger is blessed in everything, the others are not."
Hingis continued to talk about Federer. "I remember when we won the 2001 Hopman Cup. Back in the day, I was the world No. 1 while Roger wore tennis pampers," she joked. "It was not too early. You have to take those wins if they happen. I never lost joy for tennis. I cannot understand when, after retirement, players say they do not want to touch a racket anymore. My passion for the game is generally amazing. And it's still today."
Then she revealed: "I often heard someone wanted to marry me. It was pretty tough when I played doubles with Anna Kournikova. We were called the Spice Girls of Tennis. Male fans were clearly on our side."
On her early success, Hingis added: "As a little girl, I always faced opponents who were older than me. My physical gaps needed to be fulfilled with technology and especially game smartness. Steffi Graf was much better than me so I had to use new weapons to deal with players like her."
