Greg Rusedski speaks about Andy Murray skipping the US Open

Greg Rusedski believes Andy Murray made the correct decision skipping the US Open to compete at the Rafael Nadal Open. Though playing doubles throughout, Murray made a return to singles by playing the Cincinnati Masters. However, he to an opening-round defeat against Richard Gasquet. Murray also faced defeat in the Opening Round at the Winston-Salam Open by Tennys Sandgren.

He then decided on not playing the US Open, focusing on his return and playing some Challenger events before making a comeback. “When you come back from any surgery, Andy is such a great champion, it is not going to be a question of striking a tennis ball or his tactical awareness,” Rusedski said of Murray. “It is going to all be down to his movement and the nice thing was in the second set he started to move better.”

Rusedski spoke about Murray’s performances in Singles this year then, “For his first match back he played really, really well. He is doing to smart thing. He played the Winston-Salam Open. Instead of playing the US Open he is going to play some challengers as [Andre] Agassi did, and [Kei] Nishikori.”

“He needs to get match after match and see how the body holds up and see if he can get that speed and acceleration back.”

Speaking about focus areas for Murray, Rusedski said, No matter how well you hit the ball, to get back into the top 50 or higher in men’s tennis you need that foot speed and that acceleration to do it. For a first match back it was an excellent start. May his return continue to shine. It is going to be a tough few months but I think he is doing all the right steps to try and get himself back."
