Lylah Fernandez Aims to Break Into Top 200 of World Rankings
Tennis - 16-year-old Canadian teenager Lylah Fernandez says she wants to break into the Top 200 of the world rankings. In an interview to The Globe and the Mail, Fernandez, who is currently ranked No. 257 in the world, says, "I want that. Top-200 ranking. [Make the main draw at] French Open, Wimbledon. That’s what I want to do. Progress, little by little.”
The Canadian says she is inspired by the success of fellow teenager Coco Gauff, who beat her in the French Open final last year. "If she can, then I can. When I saw that at first, I thought. ‘I want to be there next year.’ ”
Fernandez has already achieved success in 2019, winning her first pro tournament at the Gatineau Challenger and becoming the runner-up at Granby, Quebec. She also won the doubles event at Gatineau with compatriot Rebecca Marino and has also been granted a main draw wild card into the Rogers Cup in Toronto which begins next week and she will meet a qualifier in the first round.
She also won the French Open junior girls singles title earlier this year and is ranked a career-high No. 2 in the ITF junior rankings. She also reached the finals of the Australian Open junior tournament in January, losing to Denmark's Clara Tauson. With her rising success, she has also inked an apparel deal with Asics, signed up with an agent and has begun working with a new coach, Dave Rineberg.
