Maria Sharapova was not consistent against Serena Williams, says Tarpischev

The Russian Tennis Federation chief Shamil Tarpischev commented on Maria Sharapova's loss to Serena Williams in the US Open first round. Tarpischev said: "Sharapova's loss was expected. Maria was unconsistent but Williams plays quicker. In order to beat Serena, you have to serve solid and lead rallies. First of all, Sharapova needs to play medium level tournaments. She has not trained. If she wants to play next year's Olympic Games, she needs to play 50 matches."

Victor Yanchuk said: "There was less hope for Maria to win. Serena played several tournaments this year, she is ready even when she is at 80-85 percent. That's already pretty high. Sharapova is still trying to be competitive and she is worse than Serena on all aspects. She made too many unforced errors. Now she is not ready. The most important thing is to be on the top 50 rankings again in order to get a direct entry to all tournaments."

Through Twitter the American played John Isner spoke of Damian Steiner being fired by the ATP for giving unauthorized interviews. The American player wrote: "I don’t know the whole story here but this seems absurd. Steiner is a fantastic umpire well liked by all players."

Carlos Berlocq commented: "Damián Steiner is a fair and correct referee , recognized by all the players on the circuit , I hope that we all support him."
