McEnroe: 'Federer invents tennis, Nadal would be nemesis. While Djokovic..'

The former world No. 1 John McEnroe praised Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. The American seven-time Grand Slam winner said: "Federer is the most complete guy and when he fires up, you cannot reach him as he makes winner from any angle and he invents tennis. But my worst nightmare as an active player would have been to face Rafael Nadal on clay when he was at his best. And then you have to say that Novak Djokovic improves on a consistent basis, also on serve and hitting volleys."

Asked who are the greatest five players ever, McEnroe replied: "I answer with my top four: Rod Laver, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal; Novak Djokovic is No. 5 but he is raising. On the top ten I instead have to put Lew Hoad, who was the strongest out of everyone when he was fit, that's what I was told although I never faced him. And then you have Bjorn Borg of course."

On Borg, he concluded: "In the beginning I envied him. He seemed a vicking god, cooler than me. And then he was able to upset me with that unbelievable fifth set in the 1980 Wimbledon final. Then, as I started spending time with him, we became friends."

McEnroe will be back on the road in the US Open working as a TV commentator and analyst. He regularly attends the four Grand Slams.
