Medvedev: 'Rafael Nadal doesn't have an advantage. If I play like this...'
Rafael Nadal played one match less than Daniil Medvedev to reach the Montreal final, three against four, as the Spaniard took advantage of Gael Monfils's retirement on Saturday. The Frenchman's decision came at around 7:30 PM, while Medvedev produced a big mental effort to defeat Karen Khachanov. Does Nadal have an advantage heading into the championship clash? "Actually not sure it's an advantage because he had to wait all the day for his match, and probably it was late, so he didn't practice after", said the Russian. "I don't know. It's better to ask him this question. But I don't find it at all as an advantage, yeah", said Medvedev, who feels very confident: "I don't know if it's the best moment (for me), but it's true that I'm playing very well right now. I believe if I am able to play like this, it's not going to be easy for Rafa. It's going to be a big battle. I'm hoping that I can pull it out."
On his mindset in approaching matches, Medvedev added: "Every match I played in my life, you want to win 6-0, 6-0 of course. Doesn't happen all the time. But if you can, you win 6-0, 6-0. That's how I step out on court. Of course, if you lose the first set, you don't want to lose in two sets. Actually, I think in the beginning kind of my ATP career and last year when I was not at the level I am now, all the matches I had to win were, like, crazy three-setters. It just means that I'm playing better now, that I'm able to beat these top players in two sets. It's a great achievement."
