Philipp Kohlschreiber on ending his five-match losing streak in Kitzbuhel
German tennis veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber didn't hide his happiness after snapping a five-match losing streak in Kitzbuhel.
The 35-year-old saw off former world No. 7 Richard Gasquet in the Kitzbuhel first round 6-3 6-2 to earn his first win since the French Open.
"It was a good match for me to start into the tournament. Richard is not hitting too hard, so there were a lot of rallies to get a good feeling on the court. I am very happy about the win. It’s not a turnaround after my bad results in recent weeks, but a good start. I was nagged by little injuries in the last months, that didn’t allow me to compete at the highest level," the former world No. 16 Kohlschreiber said post-match, as revealed on Tennis TourTalk.
Kohlschreiber, who has plummeted to No. 73 in the world, struggled at the beginning of the match as he got broken twice by Gasquet early on.
Kohlschreiber was 2-3 down in the first set before he broke Gasquet four times an route to winning eight games in a row for a 6-3 4-0 lead.
Gasquet served out the fifth game to put an end to Kohlschreiber's run but it changed nothing as the German held on to his serve to seal the win.
Two-time Kitzbuhel champion Kohlschreiber lost against Pablo Andujar in the second round.
