'Roger Federer can be allowed to do 100 more things than any other person'
During the Miami Open doubles final last month Stefanos Tsitsipas claimed Roger Federer gets a special treatment from umpires, who are stricter with him. The Swiss partly agreed, saying that umpires are stricter on outside courts than stadiums. "It's like this everywhere", said Daniil Medvedev in an interview to Eurosport. "The more important you are in life, the more things you are allowed to. That's not just in sports. It does not matter how ridiculous it can be, but a poor person needs to pay for everything and a rich person through connections cannot pay anything. For example, if I want to go watch a FC Munich match, I will do it for free by sending a message to a person who works there or to the ATP. Most probably in the VIP area, although I could pay for it. And a poor man cannot even afford to go in a normal area and he can barely pay it. Federer can be allowed to do 100 more things than any person. From one side that's bad and from the other it's normal."
He insulted Donald Young in 2016 for his skin's colour, but at the time Medvedev was a different person than now: "I understood that there are different situations where you could be misunderstood and you could be seen for something you are not and you have not done. That teaches you to be more careful sometimes. Especially in today's world where microphones, press, Internet are everywhere. Where they look at every post, every word you tell, especially considering we are athletes. But tennis players know I am not like that. And people were surprises when they saw it on internet. They were like: "What's happening?"
