Roger Federer: 'Dan Evans's legs were probably tired'
Roger Federer defeated Dan Evans in straight sets on Friday to reach the US Open fourth round. The Swiss said: "That was a good start, much better than the first two. It was tricky conditions too because of the shine and sun, heat. It was difficult to play but I played good, felt like Dan even gave me the chance to miss as well because I missed a lot. I was not playing as offensive I thought early on but then I hit a lot of winners. His legs were probably tired also from today. The court is not the fastest, especially playing at night, it gets cooler. The balls are also as not as lively as it had been. But then you come out at day time and you feel you can kick and slice and hit through the ball. That's when it gets quite interesting because you can win points in different ways. While when it's wet conditions it's like ping pong, back and forth, and then eventually somebody is gonna miss which happened in the first two rounds."
On his approach to the aggressive game, Federer said: "Seeing which ball I can attack. When it's a drop shot, for it I need to be explosive so it's about movement and footwork. Because if you are in the wrong place too late and you are still trying to find the same kind of shot, that's when you are gonna miss. You enter in two minds. Clarity, confidence is also a big thing but that's a lot up to the movement."
