Roger Federer, Djokovic, Nadal have mental edge over the others - Mathieu
In an interview the former French player Paul-Henri Mathieu commented on how above the Big Three players are compared to the rest. "Nadal, Federer, Djokovic, when we head to the court, we know we have more chances to lose than to win. Those players have a mental edge over their opponents, especially when it's a time where everything works well for them. Even if we only have a 5 percent possibility of defeating them in a match, we still give ourselves a shot. The 75 percent of a match takes place before heading into the court. We have to focus on the game and not be influenced by the opponent. It's not that easy", said Mathieu.
On the importance of statistics, Mathieu added: "It's very rare that players look at them. Time by time we look at them to analyze our opponent's game, to know how he plays in key moments, on break points... But in terms of results, no. Otherwise most of the players would not even get to the court."
On how different his life is compared to when he was a player, Mathieu concluded: "It's a big difference. I came back in my home club, Lingolsheim, near Strasbourg. There were around 500 members and a club house where you could eat. Now it's no longer there. But the facility is still the same one."
Both Federer and Djokovic will be back to compete in mid August at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati for the first time since the Wimbledon final.
