Samantha Stosur: This is always going to be a special place for me

Former Champion Samantha Stosur featured in her 15th US Open but lost in the Opening Round of the Singles event, suffering a straight sets 6-1, 6-3 loss to Ekaterina Alexandrova.

“It was obviously not the result I wanted by any means,” Stosur said. “It was obviously not the way I wanted it to go, but I still thought I handled myself well. I actually thought I hit the ball pretty clean. I was quite pleased with how I was striking it. It’s not a complete disaster.”

With her ranking dropping outside the Top-100 to No.136 on the WTA Charts, the former World No.4 will need to improve her ranking inside the Top-100 to confirm a spot in 2020.

“I hope I get one more shot at it,” Stosur said. “I’ve got doubles (with Zhang Shuai). I’m actually playing mixed as well now. l’ll try and make the most of those two events, absolutely, and next year hopefully I can come back.”

“I’ve put myself in difficult positions before and now I’ve obviously got Asia to try and look to get my ranking better hopefully to start next year in a bit better position.”

If she does not get another chance, Stosur would cherish her title run in 2011 along with her other results. “Obviously everyone talks about beating Serena (Williams) in the final but the whole tournament I played exceptional tennis and I can draw on lots of different pieces from that whole year, even the next year,” Stosur said.

“I’ve played many good matches here besides 2011. This is always going to be a special place for me to come back to.”
