The constant growth of Mr. ATP 500 Nikoloz Basilashvili
The growth of Nikoloz Basilashvili continues constant, starting from 2017. The Georgian has just won his third career title, in Hamburg, on clay-courts. Curiously he won only ATP 500 titles, a curious statistic, considering everything. Basilashvili is continuing to achieve brilliant results, due to technical, physical and mental improvements, which are characterizing these last three years of his career. At the end of May 2019 he also reached his best ranking, at the 16th position.
The Georgian started his season with the quarter-finals in Doha, third round at the Australian Open, first round in Sofia, second round in Rotterdam and quarter-finals in Dubai. After a good fourth round at the Miami Open, he achieved good results on clay-courts, his favorite surface. Quarter-finals in Budapest, third round in Rome, semi-final in Lyon, before being eliminated in the first round of the French Open. After a bad season on grass-courts (the surface on which he plays his worst tennis), he won the title in Hamburg, beating opponents like Jeremy Chardy, Alexander Zverev and Andrey Rublev.
At 27, Basilashvili is progressing his career, reaching, year-after-year, a technical and tactical maturity that he did not have in past seasons. These improvements were seen on the courts, also from a physical and mental point of view, especially in matches on clay-courts, hard and long.
Although he is ranked 16th in the ATP rankings, looking at a future in the top-10 doesn't have to be just a utopia. This can happen if he continues to improve even in the next months and seasons. It will be a very difficult and ambitious task because he will have a lot of competitors, but as Fabio Fognini has shown this year, impossible is nothing.
