John Coates Says He is Open to Nick Kyrgios Playing Tokyo Olympics
Tennis - Australian Olympic Committee President John Coates says he has an open mind about top-ranked Australian Nick Kyrgios playing for Australia at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, according to The Canberra Times.
Coates was in Canberra for an Olympic and rugby World Cup function and was quoted sa saying. "I've got an open mind about him participating. He absolutely possess great ability. I'm sure if he wanted to be in the Olympics and wanted to respect the values of our Olympic team then he'd be a very positive force for it. We have a totally open mind. It's really up to him and it's with his own national federation. Kyrgios will be an issue firstly for tennis because they have to nominate him. The difficulty for tennis is they really only control their athletes for the Davis Cup and Olympic Games."
Kyrgios withdrew from the previous Olympic Games in Rio de Janerio in 2016 after a public row with the then Australian team chef de mission Kitty Chiller. The 24-year-old Australian is currently ranked No. 30 in the world and has been one of the more polarizing figures in the tennis world.
He has won two titles this year and is through to the third round of the US Open. He is also facing two investigations by the ATP Tour for his recent controversial behaviour on the tennis courts. The ATP says it would complete the investigations after the Kyrgios' run at the US Open, where he meets another youngsetr Andrey Rublev in the third round on Saturday night on the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
