Roger Federer is the most popular sportsman in the world, says Becker
In an interview to 20 minutes several tennis legends praised Roger Federer both as a player and person.
Speaking of the buzz the Swiss generated at the French Open making his return there for the first time since 2015 this year, John McEnroe said: "We feel the eletric sensation when he plays."
Alex Corretja: "He is a rock star. He is Swiss, speaks French. Roger is a role model, a perfect player, well educated, elegant, he is classy. That's why everyone loves him. I never heard anybody saying, Oh, I do not like Federer's game."
Kim Clijsters: "Everyone asks me, Is he really nice? Everyone loves him, he is unbelievable. He goes beyond tennis, he belongs to another level."
Boris Becker: "I think he is the most popular sportsman in the world. He is more popular than footballers, basketball stars. If you speak with all the sports fans around the world, Roger will always be the No. 1. Go ask a question to Lionel Messi in German or English... Roger speaks German, French, English after the match. Who does it?"
John Coates spoke about Nick Kyrgios possibly playing the Olympic Games for the first time in his career after skipping the ones in 2016 Rio de Janeiro. Coates said: "I've got an open mind about him participating. He absolutely possess great ability. I'm sure if he wanted to be in the Olympics and wanted to respect the values of our Olympic team then he'd be a very positive force for it. We have a totally open mind. It's really up to him and it's with his own national federation. Kyrgios will be an issue firstly for tennis because they have to nominate him. The difficulty for tennis is they really only control their athletes for the Davis Cup and Olympic Games."
