Alex de Minaur praises Roger Federer after Basel final
Rising Australian star Alex de Minaur has learned on the hard way how difficult it is to play against record 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer as the Swiss ousted the Australian in the Swiss Indoors Basel final.
Federer, seeded at No. 1, controlled the final from the beginning until the end as he dropped just four games 6-2 6-2 en route to beating the Australian in their first-ever clash and clinching a record 10th title at the Swiss ATP 500 event.
"He just puts you under pressure," de Minaur said after the final, per the ATP website. "Any ball that isn't a metre from the baseline for him is a short ball. That's something I learned the hard way today. But I can't wait until I'm able to step out and play him again."
The 38-year-old Swiss broke de Minaur twice in each set and didn't give a single break point to the 20-year-old in just over an hour of play to lift his fourth title of the season.
De Minaur, who is enjoying a breakthrough season on the Tour, was aiming to win his fourth title of the season but Federer was just too much for him in the Basel final.
