Ash Barty Shortlisted for Australian Institute of Sport Performance Awards
World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty has been shortlisted for the annual Australian Institute of Sport Performance awards where fans get to decide who the winner would be.
Barty has had an incredible season in 2019 - winning the French Open, the season-ending WTA Finals and taking Australia to the Fed Cup finals in Perth, which the Australian team lost on Sunday to France in a close 2-3 contest.
Others nominated for the award include Tasmanian swimming sensation Ariarne Titmus, surfer Sally Fitzgibbons, golfer Hannah Green, cricketer Ellyse Perry, basketballer Patty Mills, wheelchair tennis star Dylan Alcott, AFL player Nat Fyfe, Rugby League's James Tedesco, snowboarder Scotty James, cyclist Caleb Ewan and cricketer Steve Smith.
This is the sixth year of the awards, which recognise the leading athletes, teams and coaches from Australia and celebrate their outstanding achievements in high performance sport.
AIS chief executive Peter Conde has said that since fans vote for the awards, it gives them an opportunity to become involved in the event and get behind their favourite player/ team. He commented, "Each year I am astonished by the quality of the short-list for these awards, and thankfully the Australian public has the task of picking the winners and not me. 2019 has once again delivered outstanding individual and team performances, whether it be Ash Barty inspiring the nation on the road to becoming the world number one, Michael Roeger smashing the world record in just his second marathon or Ariarne Titmus completing an extraordinary upset in the 400m freestyle final at the world championships."
Winners of the awards will be announced at the AIS Sport Performance Awards in Sydney on December 10.
