Bencic on chances of her and Federer playing mixed doubles in Tokyo Games
In an interview, Belinda Bencic explained why she sets little goals looking towards the future. The Swiss player said: "Every player is different, depending on your character. Bianca Andreescu, for example, heads there being very confident and says, Now I go winning this tournament. For them, it works. I instead set small goals. I try to appreciate every win. I cannot say, Now you have to reach the semifinals, all the rest is bad. I will not go to a press conference and sat, Now I will win this Grand Slam title. I am not like Nadal."
On her schedule for the beginning of the year, Bencic added: "I play in Brisbane, then the Australian Open. After that, it's still open. Then Dubai, Doha, Indian Wells and Miami."
Hopman Cup is not there anymore... "It's a shame. That's why I play ATP Cup," she joked. "But Brisbane is good, I do not have to defend any points that week."
Asked if she will play the mixed doubles in the Tokyo Olympic Games, Bencic replied: "We will see. It's not up to me," she said referring to Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka. "But it's a shame that Hopman Cup disappointed. Everybody was looking at the mixed, which was not that boring," said Bencic who played with Federer at the Hopman Cup for the last three years.
Bencic was forced to end her 2019 season on a painful note. She retired midmatch in her semi-final against Elina Svitolina at the WTA Finals in Shenzhen last week. Ashleigh Barty defeated Svitolina in the final.
