Federer: 'I did not come to Mexico for 23 years. What a mistake it was'
In an interview with Marca Claro, organizer Enrique Diaz spoke about the Greatest Match that featured Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev in Mexico City. On what it means to have Federer, Diaz said: "He is the greatest. It's a satisfaction, a big honor, a big challenge and an incentive to keep forward."
Asked about the biggest challenge in holding The Greatest Match, he replied: "There was a short time available and tennis players are very careful so we needed to care about every detail.
"We have been around for almost 40 years and in 1995 I was asked if I could find a venue to host the likes of Gaby Sabatini, Martina Navratilova, Gigi Fernández, Conchita MartÃnez, Steffi Graf and so we said yes. We started the negotiation and there the relationship started. We also hosted a Davis Cup tie between Mexico and Peru. 10 ties overall. The last one was in 2008 and now this option opened with Raul Zurutuza. It's the same surface we used for the Davis Cup and exhibition events and no tennis players complained. Mextenis trusted us for the relationship we have. Players never complained to us about the surface."
Federer admitted he loved his experience: "23 years without not coming to Mexico, what a mistake it was! It was an unbelievable experience in such a beautiful country. For both of us and me personally, to play in front of such a wonderful crowd was big. It's a historical day, I promise it will not take 23 more years to come here again."
