John Tomic Arrested for Drunk Driving on Gold Coast
Tennis - John Tomic, the father of Australian tennis player Bernard Tomic, has been arrested after being caught drunk on the Gold Coast on Saturday night.
The 55-year-old Tomic, who has been caught up in controversial situations before, was stopped by the police for a random breath test on Saturday after he was returning home from participating in the SeaFire International Fireworks Competition at Surfer's Paradise.
The reading was slightly above the legal limit of 0.05 when an on-site breath test was conducted. John Tomic was then taken to the Surfers Paradise Police Station and charged with an impaired driving charge, He will appear in Southport Court of First Instance on June 20th for a hearing.
In 2013, John Tomic was sentenced to a prison sentence after getting into a fight with Thomas Drouet, the partner of his son, Bernard, during a practice session of theirs.
The 27-year-old Tomic is currently ranked No. 188 in the world although he has been ranked as high as No. 17 in the past in 2016. In his most recent appearance on the tour, Tomic lost to 43rd ranked Brit Daniel Evans in the first round of the Stockholm Open in three sets.
Tomic is a former junior World No. 1 and won multiple Grand Slams on the junior circuit. His best performance on the senior circuit was a quarter-final appearance at Wimbledon in 2011 and reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open on three occasions, He has also won 4 ATP titles in his career so far.
