Kazakh DC Captain reflects on his team's win over Netherlands

Kazakh Davis Cup Team Captain Dias Doskarayev was just happy that his side managed to survive a tough opening tie at the inaugural Davis Cup Finals and clinch its first victory. 

Kazakhstan needed a third decisive rubber to edge out Netherlands 2-1 and get on the board in Group E ahead of a tough clash against Great Britain.

Kazakh Mikhail Kukushkin dominated Botic Van de Zandschulp 6-2 6-2 in the opening rubber of the tie, before Dutch Robin Haase claimed a tight 7-5 3-6 7-6 (5) win over Alexander Bublik to level the tie at 1-1. 

It all came down to the doubles rubbers, in which Kukushkin and Bublik delivered a big performance to beat Haase and Jean-Julien Rojer 6-4 7-6 (2). 

"It was a great match,” Doskarayev said, per the Davis Cup Finals website. “It’s Davis Cup, and we know players can play up no matter what their ranking is. I’m just happy we won this tie with some very high-level tennis. 

“I have to admit that Robin Haase played unbelievable against Bublik, who gave it all, and we were actually underdogs before the doubles. It was an important tie, but we’re not finished yet – we’ve still got an unbelievable task against Great Britain."
