Rafael Nadal plays better when he competes in Davis Cup, Olympics - Toni

In an interview with Onda Cero, Rafael Nadal's uncle Toni analyzed his nephew's Davis Cup success. "There were tough moments. The opponent started playing very well in the second set, Rafael missed a pretty easy ball on the match point and it was high pressure. Handling nerves and making a difference in the important moments is the key. There are players who play better in ATP tournaments than they do in Davis Cup and vice-versa. But when my nephew feels the support, like at the Olympic Games in Brazil and Beijing, he has a plus."

On why Nadal and Feliciano Lopez rarely play doubles together, Toni said: "They did not play their best because at the time Rafael did not serve that well while Feli did. Now it's different."

On Roberto Bautista Agut, Toni added: "It's incredible, not just that he came but that he was also prepared to play such an important match. He is always fully committed."

Toni did not attend the tie live but watched it from his home in Manacor: "You always feel nostalgic because in Davis Cup we had the best weeks throughout the year. We were spending time together. It was a special week. This year the matches were very good and the prize ceremony was amazing too. The schedule was not good because you cannot end matches at 4:00 AM but organizers plan to change it. The event should last two, three more days."

Toni works as a Head Director of the Rafa Nadal Academy, nowadays.
