David Ferrer 'lucky' to count on Rafael Nadal in Barcelona
David Ferrer spoke about his new role as a Barcelona Open Tournament Director and his goals for the future. The former world No. 3 said: "This is the tournament I liked the most as a fan and tennis player. It's a very big tournament but you always have to evolve, that the best players in the world come and bring new athletes to the crowd. We are lucky to count on a player like Rafa Nadal. I trust the organizers and I can be here for a long time. I want to do well and all parts to be happy."
Reflecting furthermore on Nadal, Ferrer added: "Another Nadal will not exist, he is unique. He won the title 11 times and you have to enjoy his high level and consistent records", said Ferrer who admitted Roger Federer is unlikely to play the event as he doesn't like too much playing on clay. He concluded: "All the players like the Barcelona Open for the city, because it takes place in a tennis club, it's very familiar and every time there are fewer clay-court tournaments on tour. After Monte Carlo, Roma and French Open, Godo is there. It's one of the biggest."
Roberto Bautista Agut will definitely play the tournament. His coach Pepe Vendrell spoke about the Spaniard's decision to play Davis Cup after his father died: "We did not go there planning to play, but we were told that Marcel Granollers and Pablo Carreno Busta were injured and that Rafa and Feliciano López were pretty tired. Roberto had a very close relationship with both parents, they were very connected, so he took a lot of things from them. He decided to be back and all of supported him.
