Coach Ian Barclay recalls winning Wimbledon with Pat Cash

Australian tennis coach Ian Barclay, 81, says Pat Cash fulfilled his childhood dream when he won it all at Wimbledon in 1987. 

Cash delivered a big performance in his lone Wimbledon final as he saw off Ivan Lendl in straight sets to win what turned out to be his lone Grand Slam title.

Barclay coached a number of Victorian and Australian Junior Champions, singles and doubles. 

Most notably, the 81-year-old worked with former world No. 4 Cash. 

Cash made back-to-back finals at the Australian Open in 1987 and 1988 but on both occasions failed to claim the main glory.

"When I think back, I think what a wonderful ending to win Wimbledon, it was just unbelievable. As a 11 year old boy, he (Pat Cash) used to ask can I win Wimbledon?" Barclay told The First Serve. 

Barclay believes that more money needs to be invested in the lower tier tournaments. 

"I get very angry that a lot of the money is spent at the top of the game and not much spent at the bottom. I don't believe we have a future if we don't have the right pyramid," Barclay said.
