Comparison with Roger Federer was not good for Dimitrov, says former coach
In an exclusive interview to Tennis World USA, Franco Davin recalled his trial coaching period with Grigor Dimitrov in 2016. What did not work? It was the Argentinean himself to tell it in an interview to Punto de Break. "Grigor is a great athlete and player, an unbelievable talent. I may have done the mistake to change his backhand in the middle of the season, for me he had to do that and I believe I would do it again. Just think that the day after I told him that, he was already hitting the shot in an unbelievable way. But making a change in mid-season is tough. Mentally it was not easy. I told him, We have to do it but results will come later. Do not think about the rankings. Then he had a great year in 2017."
Dimitrov was influenced by the comparisons with Roger Federer, then someone also criticizes him for his many love stories, with Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams... (Smiling) Without a doubt the comparisons with one like Federer and Nadal do not make things easier. But he won the ATP Finals, a Masters 1000. He is not like Federer and he will never be, but he had a great career and he still has many years in front of him."
In an interview Davin had criticized players using social media too much. Then he subscribed himself to Instagram. But his thoughts have not changed: "I think the same way. I do it to show my job. But it's a problem for players. They check their mobile phones from when they woke up to when they go sleep." Is Fabio included on this group too? He is very active on Instagram. "Yeah, Fabio is not an exception. Time by time we speak of it and I ask him what suggestion he would give a younger player on how using social media. It's a new thing and you should be careful."
