Danish Expert Peter Bastiansen Feels It is too Early for Caroline Wozniacki to Retire

Danish tennis expert Peter Bastiansen says that he feels it is too early for former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki to call time on her career but adds that it is finally her own decision, in an interview to BT.

The Dane announced she would retire after the Australian Open in January, calling time on a career that saw her win the Australian Open Grand Slam in 2018, win 30 titles overall and become World No. 1 for 71 weeks.

57-year-old Bastiansen says, "Caroline has made the most of her career. Without making it sound negative, I don't consider her to be a complete tennis player like Roger Federer, for example, who has the potential to be up there in the world's top. Caroline is a good craftsman who has delivered great results on unbelievable motivation, incredible will, physique and fighter will - and good movement and backhand. She's not super up the net, and she doesn't run and make 40 aces in each match. I take my hat off to her. I think it's amazing that with minimal potential you can get this far. She's a real-world star. Which is why I think it's too early for her to stop now. She still has a lot to offer, and I'm sure she could still be among the top 20 players in the world. But that's her decision."

Bastiansen adds that he feels Wozniacki is the greatest athlete Denmark has ever had in terms of individual sports. "She's the greatest athlete we've ever had here. In the field of individual sports, she has achieved the greatest ever by a Dane, considering that she has been number one on the world rankings on several occasions and won a Grand Slam. Yes, so Bjarne Riis won the Tour de France, but he had stuffed himself with everything illegal, so I can't take that seriously. Of course, the 1992 European soccer championship was huge, but if you look at individual sports, she is the greatest Dane ever - especially when you think about the tough competition in tennis."
