Federer, Nadal, Djokovic know they will play well in Majors - Soderling
In an interview the former world No. 4 Swedish player Robin Soderling spoke about the packed tennis calendar. Soderling believes there should be fewer events in order to let the players take more breaks and have a longer off-season. The Davis Cup Finals in Madrid ended on November 24 and some players is already back to competition this week playing an exhibition match in Saudi Arabia that will feature the likes of Stan Wawrinka, Daniil Medvedev and Fabio Fognini.
Soderling, who last played an official match in 2011, said: "If you look at the other sports, they all have a break after the end of the season, in which to recover and start preparing for the new campaign. And now we see a lot of injuries in top players, it's hard. Top players have the option of choosing to play in fewer tournaments, but those with lower rankings have to play every week. Roger (Federer), Rafa (Nadal) and Novak (Djokovic) have no problem - they can play directly in the Grand Slam tournaments and know that they will perform well. However, lower-ranked competitors do not have this advantage."
Soderling suffered with mononucleosis which was probably caused by the big effort he put in tennis: "For years, I've been saying that the Davis Cup needs to change, but maybe not as drastically. However, I thought of something different - having the tournament every year or every four years, as the World Cup."
Soderling reached 2009 and 2010 back to back French Open finals.
