Roger Federer's appearance fee in Buenos Aires was not that high, says insider
In an interview, the Cordoba Open Tournament Director Mariano Ink spoke about Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev playing an exhibition match in front of a packed crowd in Buenos Aires, Argentina, last month. He said: "It's good for tennis. To have also Zverev, was great. We need to have a bigger market. In Argentina tennis is a very popular sport, three million people play it, which is huge. The images were shown on the headlines of newspapers and main TV channels. If kids start playing tennis because they saw Federer in Buenos Aires, that would be fantastic. I watched it on TV and I loved it. That's a promotion for tennis. I was in Madrid attending ATP meetings at the Davis Cup Finals."
On Federer getting $2.2 million to play, Mariano added: "He is Roger Federer, the greatest tennis player ever so far. It's what he deserves. He is the best in the history of tennis. Perhaps it may not be even too much time looking at his legacy in the sport."
On why Juan Martin del Potro is not playing in Cordoba, he concluded: "We always talk to Juan Martin's agent, the Team 8 event. We have a very good relationship with him and we always ask him to play but it's difficult for him to play clay-court tournaments because of his wrist. Long rallies make it complicated. He only plays in Madrid, Rome, French Open. Doctors tell him not to play too much. For now, he is not committed to playing but we always talk and he is one of the biggest Argentinean sportspersons in history and we want to have him."
