John Peers reflects on time spent with partner Henri Kontinen
Australian doubles specialist John Peers said he and Finland's Henri Kontinen mutually agreed to split and find new partners for the upcoming season but they remained on good terms.
After winning 13 titles in their first three season as a pair, Peers and Kontinen failed to live up to the expectation this year as they didn't claim a single title in 2019.
Kontinen and Peers won their maiden Grand Slam glory at the Australian Open in 2017 and also won back-to-back titles at the Nitto ATP Finals in 2016 and 2017, respectively.
"I had a great few years with Henri,” Peers told Emageo Group. “We both thought it was time to part ways but we’re still good friends. We are leaving it on good terms, which is always what you want to do. It’s going to be a nice fresh feeling with Mikey and something new and energetic."
Peers' new partner will be eight-time doubles champion and world No. 10 Michael Venus.
"I think it’s going to be a good positive thing because we already know each other so well and we’ve already spent a lot of time practising with each other, it actually becomes a lot easier when you’ve already done all that work before you have done the work as a team," Peers said of his partnership with Venus.
