Ferrer: 'Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic are still on high level'
Former world no. 3 David Ferrer finished his fantastic career back in May in front of the home fans at Caja Magica in Madrid. A Grand Slam finalist and the Masters 1000 champion had been one of the best players outside the 'Big 4' in the last 15 years or so, lifting 27 ATP trophies from 52 finals and earning more than 300 Major and Masters 1000 wins combined! Alongside his incredible ATP journey, David had always given his heart and soul while defending the colors of Spain in the Davis Cup, competing for ten years and delivering 28 victories from 33 rubbers.
Ferrer was a member of the team that claimed three Davis Cup trophies, defeating the players like Andy Roddick, Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka, Gilles Simon, Juan Martin del Potro, John Isner and Tomas Berdych and scoring a decisive victory over Philipp Kohlschreiber in that epic clash against Germany last year in Valencia. For all the efforts, David received the Davis Cup Award of Excellence in Madrid at the same place where he ended a career, honored for everything he had achieved for promoting tennis worldwide.
After watching the Davis Cup Finals where Spain claimed the title, Ferrer went to London to embrace the ATP Champions Tour action at the Royal Albert Hall, competing against some of the old rivals and enjoying his time on the court again. Asked about Rafael Nadal's season, Ferrer praised world no. 1 and compatriot, describing it as one of the best that Nadal ever played and calling his friend a "superhero." Also, Ferrer mentioned Federer and Djokovic who still compete on a high level, motivated to chase Major titles in the next couple of years.
"Rafa is just unbelievable, to finish as the number one player in the world, playing amazing tennis, winning all the matches at the Davis Cup. It's maybe the greatest-ever season that I've seen from him," said Ferrer. "The thing with Rafa is that he is still improving his game. He is a superhero. Rafa, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are all exceptional tennis players, they still have the motivation to be there and to be able to win the Grand Slams. People must enjoy Rafa over the next few years because it will be challenging to see the like of him again. I'm thrilled to see him, Roger and Novak all still playing at such a high level."
