Kim Birrell Closer to Returning to the Courts After Elbow Injury
Australia's Kim Birrell, who scored a big Top 10 win over Daria Kasatkina in Brisbane earlier this year, says she is closer to coming back on the court after an injury lay-off due to an elbow injury. Birrell, who also reached the third round of the Australian Open this year, spoke to Examiner and commented, "I'm getting closer to starting back on court and I miss it a lot, especially coming down here and talking about tennis, playing with the little kids, it's made me miss it more and it's been so much fun."
Birrell was part of Tennis Australia's hot shots racquet roadshow and spoke at the Launceston Preparatory School to students as part of the event and also played with them. "It [helping the future] is something I've always been passionate about because I've had such an amazing experience with tennis. I've learned so many things about myself through the sport and I just think it's an amazing opportunity for making friends. If they want to keep playing, there are so many opportunities that can come your way through tennis."
Birrell, whose mother and father met through tennis, says this is not the first time she has come to Tasmania. "I have some cousins in Hobart so I've spent some time there and I absolutely love it - it's one of my favorite places. I've played the Hobart International a few times and it's one of the first WTA events I played so it'll always hold a special place in my heart."
Birrell is currently ranked No. 247 in the world, down from her career-best ranking of No. 154 in May, She last played at Wimbledon, where she lost in the first round of qualifying to Japan's Misaki Doi.
