Monfils and Svitolina swing axes in Brisbane ahead of New Year’s kiss
Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina showed their skills in a round of axe-throwing in Brisbane just one day before the couple will celebrate New Year’s Eve, probably with the traditional kiss.
The two lovebirds showed that love is possible even if they travel all year long in different countries playing different tournaments. The French-Ukrainian pair always enjoy the company of each other and anyone can see this. All it takes is a peek on their shared Instagram account, ‘@gemslife’.
Instagram aside, Monfils and Svitolina’s last adventure involved quite an uncommon sport for the non-Australian fellow, and that’s axe throwing. The couple had a few tries at hitting the center of a wooden target using a sharpened axe.
Regarding their professional targets, Monfils is preparing to lead France in the race for the ATP Cup. Gael, 10th in the world rankings, is France’s leading racquet and will compete alongside Benoit Paire, Gilles Simon, Nicolas Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vasselin. The international competition will start on 3 January 2020.
On the other side, Svitolina is preparing for her first tournament of the new year and that is, obviously, Brisbane International. Svitolina is currently on the 6th place in the WTA rankings. She played semifinals at Wimbledon and US Open in 2019, while her last achievement was reaching WTA Finals' last stage, where he lost against world number one Ash Barty. Elina will try to improve her last year's performance in Brisbane as she was defeated in the first round by Sasnovich.
