Paul Haarhuis Disappointed at Not Playing Kazakhs at Home Next March

Paul Haarhuis, the captain of the Dutch Davis Cup team, says he would have liked to play their next tie against Kazakhstan at home. The Netherlands and Kazakhstan will square off in the Davis Cup World Group Qualifiers in March with the Dutch team traveling to Kazakhstan for the tie on 6th and 7th March. The winner of the tie will move to the Davis Cup Finals in Madrid in November.
Speaking to tennis.nl, Haarhuis says, “With Kazakhstan, we know where we stand. Kukushkin and Bublik are good players, but we certainly have opportunities. It is a shame that we do not play at home, because the presence of the Dutch public always gives extra support. It would, of course, be fantastic to re-qualify for the Davis Cup Finals in Madrid. It is a great event with plenty of Davis Cup atmosphere. Even though improvements are certainly possible. We will do our utmost in March to reach the final week ".
In this year's competition, Netherlands were drawn against Kazakhstan and Great Britain but did not advance to the quarter-final stage. Kazakhstan defeated Netherlands 2-1 in the Group stage. As a result of their loss, they will be part of the 12 qualifying ties that will determine which countries join the six confirmed nations for next year's event - the six confirmed are the four semi-finalists from this year's event - Canada, Russia, Spain and Great Britain - as well as two wild cards awarded by the ITF for Serbia and France.
The 18-nation Davis Cup Finals are scheduled to be held from November 23 to November 29 in Madrid next year. 2019 was the first year that the new Davis Cup format was introduced by the ITF and Kosmos, the company led by Gerard Pique.
