Rafael Nadal still in doubt if playing Mallorca Open or not
In an interview the tennis tournaments organizer Edwin Weindorfer spoke about the new WTA Berlin and the new ATP Mallorca which will both take place on grass in June. "Berlin is a much better place for a women's event than Mallorca. The men will play there in 2020 and we will have Rafael Nadal", said Weindorfer, without clarifing if the Spaniard will be in the tournament venue just practicing or actually playing competitive matches.
On how helpful the Wimbledon board has been, Weindorfer added: "That's extremely important. Now you play on grass for a longer time as there are three weeks between French Open and Wimbledon. In Berlin the courts will be the same, the balls will be the same as well as the surface. We would also like to have an environment like there is in Wimbledon."
Asked if Steffi Graf may be involved, Weindorfer replied: "We have not spoken about it yet. But of course it's an idea. She was the most successful player of the former Berlin tournament. It would be an absolute honor if she came. Maybe for the opening or other things, but we just take one step at time", said Weindorfer who also shared that at least four top ten players will compete. They are also trying to look for a title sponsor. They have a five-year contract which plans to be extended in the future. "We will analyze after four years and if it fits, also looking at fans' interest, we will absolutely be interested about what happens next."
