Thiem will have more chances to beat Nadal in the French Open - Coach

In an exclusive interview with Tennis World USA, Dominic Thiem's coach Nicolas Massu spoke about the reasons why the Austrian player lost to Rafael Nadal in the last two French Open finals. The Chilean is confident that sooner or later things will change. "You need a mixture of things," said Massu. "Rafa won the French Open 12 times. To beat Rafa at the Roland Garros is one of the most difficult things to do in sports, not just tennis. If there is a player who can beat Rafa, one of the guys is Dominic. But as time goes on and he gains more experience, he will do better whether he faces Rafa or any other player because he was there before. You never know when it's gonna happen. He needs to take his chances and he is preparing every day to achieve his dream. But before that, you have to think step-by-step."

On Thiem's ATP Finals championship clash loss to Stefanos Tsitsipas, Massu added: "It's part of the sport. When you play matches like the finals, it can happen. The difference was made by two or three points, it could have gone either way. It was a very close match. Dominic won many many matches during the year like this. It's either you win or lose. They were 4-all in the tie-break and Stefanos won the last three points."

Thiem defeated Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in the round-robin stages of the ATP Finals but lost to Matteo Berrettini in the last round-robin match. In the semi-final, he ousted the 2018 champion, Alexander Zverev.
