Tomeu Salva, from losing 6-0 6-0 vs Rafael Nadal to become his close friend
In an interview Tomeu Salva spoke about his friendship with the 19-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal. Salva, as quoted by ATP, has been knowing the world No. 1 for a long time. He said: “We were seven years old. He played at the Manacor Tennis Club with his uncle (Toni Nadal) and I lived in a nearby town, but I also went to school in Manacor. The first time I saw Rafa was at his club. It was my first tournament and I had to play against him in the second round. I lost 0-6, 0-6. I had no chance at all. We started competing against each other at tournaments. We began practising together and from there we became friends. We got to know each other well and we wound up attending the Balearic Tennis Federation's academy in Palma."
On the differences between him and Nadal, Salva added: “In terms of level of play, I was a few years behind. We started spending less and less time together because we were living some distance apart. We bumped into each other at events but even that became less frequent because he was competing at more prestigious events. Still, we kept in contact almost daily.”
Asked if she works when she is on the planes too, Venus Williams replied: "When I was in school I did so much work on the plane so I was very ahead when I would get to the tournament. I don’t have time for that at a tournament. There were a couple of years where there wasn’t one plane ride where I wasn’t working the whole time, especially on an international flight. I would work until basically i had to go to sleep and then I got to the tournament and it was fine!"
