25 questions I wish I could ask Roger Federer
“I feel like I’ve done so many interviews, I feel like people know everything [about me] by now,” Roger Federer had told Vogue in their ‘73 questions with Roger Federer’ video. Yet...
Even if the Swiss feels like he has answered every possible question ever, his millions of fans from all over the world could certainly come up with an overwhelming amount of details they still want to figure out about him. And I plead guilty.
I have never known tennis without Roger Federer. For real, I am eighteen years old, and Roger has spent over 22 years on the tour. He is the biggest reality of the world of the little yellow ball as I know it.
If I could sit at a cafe table with him, these are the questions I would ask:
What is the biggest misconception that people have about you, your career, your life, or your personality? Fans and journalists are always debating over your status as the GOAT, what do you think about that? What is the question you wish journalists would ask you, but they never do? What is the best and the worst question you’ve ever been asked? Have you ever googled yourself, and if so, what did you type? How is fame positive and how is it negative? Do you ever stop and think about the humongous number of lives you've had an impact on? Have you ever lived a funny situation when people haven’t recognized you and it made things awkward? What is the story behind the first time that someone pointed a finger at you and said, ‘Look, it’s Roger Federer’? What would you give to be able to live one day as an anonymous person? If you could switch lives with one person for a day, who would you choose and why? What retired player would you like to play a Major final against? Had you ever thought, when you played as a junior, that you’d become the celebrity you are now? How has people’s way of considering you changed over time, the more you climbed positions in the ranking and wrote records next to your name? What is your favorite non-tournament-related title? If you were given the dreadful news that you could only keep one of your titles, which would it be? If you could come back at the start of your career, is there anything you would do differently? What if you had chosen badminton or basketball over tennis? What is the one thing you would never do on the court? What is the one you would never do again? How much time do you think you have spent on a tennis court in your life (in years)? What is the most flattering on-court comment you’ve ever received from an opponent? What is the funniest career-related thing that your children have said to you? What part or aspect of the tour will you miss the most when you retire? How do you feel about people wanting to know so much about your life? What other interesting questions have I missed?
