Alexander Zverev to Return to Munich in 2020
Germany's top-ranked player Alexander Zverev has confirmed his participation for the BMW Open by FWU, the tournament organizers have announced.
The tournament is an ATP 250 category event and will be held from April 27th to May 3rd at the venue of the MTTC Iphitos. Zverev won the title in Munich in 2017 and 2018 and lost to eventual champion Cristian Garin, of Chile, in the quarter-finals in 2019. He is the second name to be announced by tournament organizers, who earlier confirmed that rising Italian Jannik Sinner will be playing the 2020 edition. 18-year-old Sinner will be playing in Munich for the first time in his career.
The 22-year-old Zverev is ranked No. 7 in the world but has been ranked as high as No. 3 in 2017 when he won a career-best 5 ATP titles, including the Masters Series titles in Canada and Rome. He also won the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals in 2018. He has won 5 ATP titles in his career on clay, two of those coming in Munich.
In a press statement released, Zverev commented, “The BMW Open by FWU is one of my favorite clay-court tournaments on the tour. I won twice here and the people are really great. From the spectators to the organizers to every staff member, everyone tries to make you feel comfortable as a player. I am happy to be there again in 2020. It is always a great motivation to play here in front of my fans"
The event is one of four German tournaments on the ATP Tour calendar and almost 39,000 spectators attended the tournament in 2019.
