Nick Kyrgios: 'It feels great to play in front of the home crowd'
For the fifth year in a row, Nick Kyrgios finished the season in the top-35 despite many ups and downs in 2019. The Canberra native claimed two ATP 500 titles in Acapulco and Washington, both after saving a match point against Rafael Nadal and Stefanos Tsitsipas in the rounds before the final. The other results were not that good for the troubled Aussie, struggling to find the form and having to deal with a knee and collarbone injuries. The latter one had bothered him in the closing stages of the year, withdrawing from Beijing, Shanghai, Vienna and Paris and finishing his Davis Cup Finals campaign earlier than expected despite two wins.
Besides unpredictable run in the season behind us, the Canberra native produced some of the worst antics ever seen on the tennis court, throwing tantrums towards the crowd, umpires and rivals to earn a potential 16-week ban and $113,000 fine if he doesn't change his court attitude. After a suitable rest, Nick is ready to rumble again in 2020, feeling good ahead of the new season and the ATP Cup that should bring the best from him, as always during the team competitions when he can share the court and passion with teammates. Australia will face Germany, Greece and Canada in Group F and Nick will kick off the campaign against Jan-Lennard Struff on Friday, hoping for the best possible start and looking to find the rhythm that would guide him towards more consistent results than in 2019.
"I have had no injuries of yet this year," Kyrgios jokes. "I have had one session; the body held up well. I had a couple of frothies last night; I am feeling good. I mean, it is New Year's today. I am feeling alright and refreshed. I love being around the boys; I love the team environment. I do what I can to get the best out of these boys and I know I have their support - I go out and bring good energy. Being the Aussies, we travel throughout the year. I was away for six and a half months in 2019 and it is awesome to be able to play in front of our home fans."
