Bianca Andreescu: Win over Garbine Muguruza Marked a Turning Point for Me

US Open champion Bianca Andreescu says that her win over former World No. 1 Garbine Muguruza at Indian Wells was the turning point for her and made her believe she could win a Grand Slam.

Andreescu, who went on to win the Indian Wells tournament, commented, "When I enter the court I do everything not to focus on who is on the other side. I think that helped me to achieve the goals I achieved, but when I beat Cibulkova that made me change something because then I beat Muguruza 6-0 and 6-1 (in the quarters at Indian Wells), a very rare result at what was my best win of the year. I think after this meeting I realized that I could win a Grand Slam."

Andreescu also says that her level of play goes up when she is playing a Top 10 player. â€œMy level goes up because, deep down, I know I'm playing against the top five or ten tennis players on the circuit. In these cases, my level is higher and that's good because I have to raise my level if I want to be a better tennis player."

Andreescu also won the Rogers Cup event and went on to become the first Canadian singles player to win a Grand Slam at the US Open in September. She is currently ranked No. 5 in the world. She has pulled out of the upcoming ASB Classic in Auckland and hopes to be fit for the Australian Open in January where she will be one of the leading contenders.
