Diego Schwartzman: I like the Format of the New Davis Cup but...

Argentine Diego Schwartzman says the new Davis Cup format should not be held at the end of the tennis season as it takes place when the players have already finished the tennis circuit.

According to El Peque, Schwartzman says, “It is played on a date that is long after we finished the circuit (November 18-24). Holidays are shortened, which we practically do not have, you can't make a good preseason and that affects us a little."

However, Schwartzman does like the new condensed version of the competition, which he prefers to the earlier home-and-away format. "We liked the majority, everything went very well, the players and the teams were very well treated and it was all very neat. It has things to improve, such as dates and times, but from my point of view it is better to do it in a week and not throughout the year."

The Argentine, who finished the season as World No. 14, continues to comment, "Gastón Gaudio is a very good captain and with whom the best relationship exists. In March there will be a difficult series against Colombia to qualify for Madrid, but for that, there will be time."

Reflecting on his 2019 season, Schwartzman says he had a very good season as he was able to improve his ranking by a few places. "That is something already difficult with the ranking I currently have, but staying a few years ago up there is very positive for me. I will try to keep improving and for that, I will have to make a good preseason and not have injuries to be able to be well and compete all year."

Schwartzman will begin his 2020 season in Australia with the ATP Cup, followed by the Australian Open Grand Slam tournament.
