Gael Monfils reacts to Novak Djokovic loss at ATP Cup
French world No. 9 Gael Monfils admitted that not taking his opportunities against second-ranked Serb Novak Djokovic costed him losing their ATP Cup clash.
Monfils, an eight-time ATP champion, had a chance to close out the tie against Serbia but he failed to stun Djokovic as the 16-time Grand Slam champion won 6-3 6-2.
Djokovic, 32, saved 9-of-9 of Monfils' break point chances, all while breaking the Frenchman once in the first set and two times in the second set to get the job done in two sets.
Monfils, a former world No. 6, continued to struggle mightily against Djokovic as the former world No. 1 now owns a dominant 16-0 head-to-head record against the 33-year-old Frenchman.
"I was unable to take the opportunities,” Monfils said, per the ATP Cup. “He was very efficient on break points and I think the big points. Today I was a little bit struggling to win the big points."
Djokovic then delivered in the deciding rubber as he and Viktor Troicki edged out Nicolas Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-3 6-7 (5) 10-3 to improve to 2-0 in Brisbane.
