Mihaela Buzărnescu Speaks About Her 2019 Season and Her Goals for 2020

31-year-old Romanian Mihaela Buzărnescu reflects on her difficult season in 2019, going down from No. 25 in the rankings to No. 109 in the world and her goals for the 2020 season, in an interview to GSP.

Speaking about her injuries, Buzarnescu says, "The year 2019 was quite difficult, with ups and downs, taking into account my ankle injury and the fact that I tried to protect it. That's why I forced my shoulder more, which gave me pain there, causing a rupture of the super-spinal tendon. There were OK matches, good matches, less good matches. At first, I had a few tournaments that I missed in the first round and it was very difficult for me to accept this and accept the comments that came. The fact that the world did not support me, only those in my team did. Later I had some good results, but no one knew and I did not want anyone to find out that I was playing with pain and I was injecting because I really wanted to defend my points. To remain in the World Top 50-60, especially since the title from San Jose was going to be defended, a very difficult time because I did not succeed and in one week I dropped from 58th place to 127th in the rankings. Then, due to a good result, the semi-final from Hiroshima, I managed to reach 103, but after two weeks I had to withdraw during the match in Tashkent because my ankle ached and since then I have not played any games. I stopped, followed the recoveries, hoping that I would be better. In my luck, in the ankle case, the problems were alleviated, but in the end, the pains did not diminish."

Buzarnescu says if she were given a chance, she would like to replay the match against countrywoman Simona Halep in the second round of Wimbledon earlier this year., Buzarnescu says, "If I were to play a 2019 game again, it would be the one against Simona because it was beautiful and I liked the atmosphere and our matchup."

On her goals for 2020, Buzarnescu says, "For 2020, I very much wish to play the Olympic Games and return to the World Top 50, as a first goal. After entering the Top 50, another threshold follows, but I take it step by step, of course, if I am healthy and can play many competitions, that I hope the most. I also want to be on the Fed Cup team, so I can help the team."
