Muguruza avoids Australian Open disaster with miraculous pep talk: “Hang in there”

Garbine Muguruza was one step away from being kicked out in the inaugural round for the second Grand Slam in a row. The encouraging words she said to herself, after she lost the opening set against Shelby Rogers with 6/0, provoked triggered a miraculous comeback at the Australian Open.

Muguruza won the last two sets of the match while dropping just one single game. The match ended 6/0, 1/6, 0/6, but the former French Open and Wimbledon champion admitted she hasn’t felt well on the court.

"Today out there, well, it was a very tough performance because I wasn't feeling at my best at all. But at the end I could manage to give my fight. Happy that I came back [after] that tough first set." Muguruza said during her post-match conference.

Garbine even called the doctor at 0-5 in the first set, this being another proof she was having a hard time keeping up with her opponent on the court. However, Muguruza has appealed to her inner warrior and managed an unexpected comeback after leveling up her gameplay.

When you're not feeling well, you sometimes don't know how to turn things around. You know, I said to myself, 'Hey, you're here, you're on the court, you're playing Australian Open, it's a special moment, so just hang in there and keep fighting.' At least she has to play very good the entire match. I stayed behind her. You know, today I won the battle." Muguruza said.
