Roger Federer isn't just breezing through rounds at the Australian Open
"Thank God, it was a super tiebreaker or otherwise I would have lost this one," Roger Federer laughingly says to ESPN Commentator Jim Courier after the Swissman's win over John Millman. It might have been a repeat match for Millman, an Australian who wanted to keep his victory streak against Federer alive. Despite even home, the crowds were in the majority for the Swiss.
It was a few years ago at the 2018 U.S. Open that Millman defeated Federer in four sets with the last one also being a tiebreak. Back then, it was a major upset and Federer might have felt he'd have to come back with something a bit stronger to win over the Australian. The years have gotten to Federer pulling himself out of a 8-4 deficit pointer in the tiebreak isn't something to take lightly. He also was able to sustain his consistency to bring up the goods and win. "I had to stay so focused, make the right decision," Federer says as he wiped beats of perspiration from his brow.
Being 38 years old and years on tour doesn't always guarantee that experience will kick in. John Millman at 30 has had his time with inuries including serious shoulder issues which he's came back from and won matches. This match wasn't all about Federer but Millman too since he's the home-town country guy. The match took slightly over four hours, not only wearing out Federer, but Millman as well. The Swiss gave kudos to the Australian syaing "He's a great fighter, a good guy and it came down to the wire...He was doing all of that stuff at the beginning of the reaker," the Swiss would say about John. He laughingly said that "The demons are always thee. They're lurking..."
When Federer steps on the court, fans and the tennis community have an iconic perspective of his performances. The stress is always on him to use his strategies and come up with the wins. But wins are difficult for anyone to accomplish. The Swiss man has to be also a fighter. Being a top player, Federer and others always feel the push and have learned to live with the consequences of losses as well as victories. It's a tough situation but that's how it is when dealing with their passions, lifestyle and livelihood.
