ATP New York: Reilly Opelka marches on. John Isner loses to Jordan Thompson

World no. 63 Jordan Thompson is through to his first quarter-final since Antalya last June, toppling the top seed John Isner 7-6, 6-7, 6-3 in two hours and 31 minutes. The Aussie fended off all five break chances, staying in touch with John in the opening two sets and securing one break in the decider that pushed him through, delivering the American's sixth loss in 2020. Isner squandered three break chances in the fifth game of the opener, falling 3-0 behind in the tie break after a volley winner from Thompson who claimed the breaker 7-2 with a service winner. With no room for errors, the home player fended off three break chances in games seven and nine of the second set, serving well in the tie break and clinching it 7-3 thanks to a forehand down the line winner that sent the clash into a decider. There, Jordan erased two break points in the opening game with winners, stealing John's serve in the next game and moving over the top with a hold at 15 at 5-3 to book the spot in the quarters.

The defending champion Reilly Opelka fired 20 aces and fended off all four break chances to beat Yoshihito Nishioka 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 15 minutes. The Japanese fought well but it wasn't enough for at least a set, getting broken once in each set to finish his journey in the second round and propel Reilly through. The American survived eight deuces and two break chances in the opening game of the match, saving those with winners and avoiding an early setback. Nishioka did well to stay in touch at 3-4 after erasing two break points before Reilly broke him at love two games later for a 6-4 after a forehand error from a left-hander. Facing two break points at 4-4 in set number two, Opelka landed two booming serves to get out of troubles, holding with an ace and stealing the rival's serve at 15 in the next game to seal the deal and make a winning start. A qualifier Jason Jung is through to his second consecutive New York quarter-final, beating Cameron Norrie 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 17 minutes.

The Taiwanese lost serve once and grabbed three breaks to control the pace, serving well throughout the encounter to keep the pressure on the Briton all the time. After two early breaks in games two and three, Jason picked up another one at 3-3 to move in front, closing the opener with a hold in game ten. He sailed through his service games in set number two, earning a break in game five and moving over the top with another comfortable hold at 5-4 to stay on the title course. The 8th seed Kyle Edmund is through to the second quarter-final of the season, ousting Dominik Koepfer 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 33 minutes. Kyle saved seven out of eight break chances and earned four breaks, having the upper hand in the opener and sealing the deal with a late break at 5-4 in the second set to book the place in the last eight.
