ATP Santiago: Seyboth Wild, Barrios Vera, Dellien and Carballes Baena advance

The first edition of the Chile Open in Santiago is up and running, with four first-round matches taking place on Monday. The 19-year-old Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild took down Facundo Bagnis 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 in an hour and 46 minutes for the third ATP win, fending off seven out of eight break chances and delivering four breaks to control the pace in sets he claimed. The youngster was on a roll in the opener, serving well and producing breaks in games four and six before securing the set with a forehand winner at 5-1. Bagnis raised his level in set number two, forcing an error from the opponent in game two to move in front and repelling two break chances at 5-3 to seal it with a service winner. Returners had their chances in the first five games of the deciding set and it was the Brazilian who seized them, earning breaks in games two and four to race in front and moving over the top with an ace in game seven for the place in the last 16.

Another player with the wild card, Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera made a winning start at home event, beating a qualifier Carlos Taberner 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in two hours and ten minutes. The Chilean fended off five out of seven break chances, breaking the Spaniard four times and dominating with two early breaks in the decider to secure the place in the next round and valuable ATP points, ranked 300th at the moment! The 6th seed Hugo Dellien ousted a former Roland Garros semi-finalist Marco Cecchinato 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in an hour and 44 minutes, securing the first ATP victory of the season. Cecchinato fired ten aces but also seven double faults, getting broken once in sets he lost and not being able to gain more from that excellent second set. Dellien claimed the opener with an early break in game two, fending off a couple of break chances in the ninth game for a 6-3 and a big step towards the finish line.

The Italian had the upper hand in set number two, claiming it in under 30 minutes with a double break, losing steam again in the decider to take only five points on the return and push the Bolivian through after getting broken in game four. In the all-Spanish encounter, Roberto Carballes Baena toppled a struggling Jaume Munar 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in two hours and 38 minutes for the second victory of the season. Carballes Baena won two points more than Munar, getting broken four times and clinching five return games to cross the finish line first. They kicked off the action with four straight breaks and it was Roberto who added another one at 3-3 to grab the opener 6-4. The second set was fluid and Munar clinched it 6-4 with a late break in game ten, unable to keep that momentum in the decider where Carballes Baena prevailed with a single break at 2-2 to advance into the second round.
