Boris Becker: 'Most players would have retired after that hip injury but not Murray'
2020 Laureus World Sports Awards will take place in Berlin on February 17, with a couple of tennis players among the nominees, including Rafael Nadal, Naomi Osaka, Bianca Andresscu, Cori Gauff. Also, the three-time Major champion Andy Murray is in contention in the Laureus World Comeback of the Year award, returning to tennis last June and winning ATP title in Antwerp in October. Finishing the 2016 season as the year-end no. 1, Andy started to struggle with a hip injury in the following year, skipping all the action after Wimbledon and undergoing two surgeries to take the pain away and start competing again. Feeling no problems, Murray made a return last June with the doubles title at Queen's with Feliciano Lopez, entering the singles events alone soon and regularly working on his game until that long-awaited ATP crown in Belgium, the first since Dubai 2017.
Still, more problems waited around the corner for the Briton, suffering a pelvic injury that has kept him away from the court ever since the Davis Cup Finals in November. Andy had to skip the preseason training in Miami and withdraw from the ATP Cup, the Australian Open, Marseille and Rotterdam, having no idea about a possible return date but almost certainly skipping both Indian Wells and Miami. Speaking about Murray, a former world no. 1 Boris Becker said most players would have retired after such a severe hip injury that he experienced. The German praised Andy's efforts and the level he produced in the second part of the last season, backing him to make another comeback and get back on the winning way.
"Most players would have retired after a serious hip injury like that. If you had asked me last year, I didn't think he would be here. But Andy being Andy, he did come back and played wonderfully in the second half of last year. Andy never had the most power or the most talent but always a great determination and will that sets him apart."
