Ivanisevic: "Novak Djokovic is already the best tennis player in history"
Novak Djokovic won the Australian Open for the eighth time in his career by beating Dominic Thiem in the final. The Serbian champion could soon reach Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, who have won 19 and 20 Major respectively.
By winning the 2016 French Open, he became the eighth player in history to achieve the Career Grand Slam and the third man to hold all four major titles at once, the first since Rod Laver in 1969 and the first ever to do so on three different surfaces. He is the only male player to have won all nine of the Masters 1000 tournaments.
In a recent interview, his coach Goran Ivanisevic talked about Nole's greatness: “I repeat, for me he is already the best tennis player in history,” Ivanisevic told SK. When he is present, ready and healthy, there is no one better. What will be looked at at the end of their careers will be decided by people, but I think Novak will be the best in all relevant categories.”
“I do not believe Novak will play for another five years, although he has a very good five years,” he added. “He will most likely top the Federer record for most weeks at No. 1 after the US Open and the record for most Grand Slams next year. He can even do that this year, for which he would have to win all three remaining Slams. But if he wins all three, then he has again done something that only Rod Laver has managed.”
