Kim Clijsters is Familiar with New Players on Tour Through Her Commentating
Former World No. 1 Kim Clijsters spent Friday morning in Dubai, practicing with American Danielle Collins, the world No. 50 and former Australian Open finalist, as she prepares to make her much awaited comeback to the tennis circuit at next week's WTA Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. Clijsters has taken a wild card into the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships where six of the world's Top 10 players will also be competing.
Speaking to HLN, the Belgian spoke about the new players on the tour and says she has become a bit familiar with them. "I may not be present on the circuit for the past few years but there are girls present here that I got to know while commentating on the Grand Slam tournaments. Players that I have followed at tournaments and of which I have started to watch some training sessions. But personally I have never spoken with them."
Clijsters practiced with the Belgian Fed Cup team last week and said she had a good time with the other Belgian players on the team. "That was fun. Of course I already knew Elise (Mertens) and Kirsten (Flipkens), but I did not know Ysaline (Bonaventure) and Greet (Minnen) as well. I had already seen them play tennis, but I had never really talked to them. It was nice to get to know them as well."
Speaking about her comeback, Clijsters says, "You eventually come across many familiar faces. Trainers that you know from the past but have now started working with someone else. That remains inherent in the environment. But of course there are also many young girls who have joined in recent years."
